Smart Metering with AI Cameras: Automatic Electricity, Gas & Water Meter Reading

4 products

Analog electricity, gas, and water meters can be retrofitted and read out automatically with AI cameras, no meter replacement required. The AI cameras from Dragino photograph the meter reading, recognize the digits via AI (OCR) directly on the device, and transmit the value wirelessly via LoRaWAN or NB-IoT. This enables an easy entry into smart metering and automatic meter reading (AMR), even for existing meters.

What products are available for AI-based meter reading?

LoRaWAN AI Camera (AIS01-LB)

The AIS01-LB-EU868 is a LoRaWAN AI camera for water, gas, and electricity meters. It captures the meter reading via photo, analyzes the digits using AI, and sends the value over LoRaWAN to your network, ideal for battery-powered, off-grid installations with long range.

NB-IoT AI Camera (AIS01-NB2)

The AIS01-NB2-GE performs the same task via NB-IoT/cellular. It's suitable anywhere a LoRaWAN gateway isn't available and data needs to be transmitted directly over the cellular network. A SIM card with an NB-IoT plan and your own endpoint (MQTT, UDP, or TCP) to receive the values are required.

AI Image Sensor (AI01)

The AI01 AI Image Sensor is the AI camera module for image capture and forms the basis for automatic digit recognition on the meter.

Accessory: USB-TTL Adapter (AUC)

The AUC USB TTL Adapter is used to configure and set up the firmware of the AIS01-LB-EU868 via PC.

How does automatic meter reading with an AI camera work?

The camera is mounted in front of the existing meter and photographs the meter dial at set intervals. An AI/OCR recognition reads the digits directly on the device, so only the final meter reading is transmitted, saving both energy and data volume. Transmission is via LoRaWAN (AIS01-LB) or NB-IoT (AIS01-NB2).

Typical applications

Reading electricity meters

Capture electricity meter readings automatically and transmit them wirelessly, without manual on-site readings.

Reading gas and water meters

Mechanical gas and water meters without a digital interface can also be read via AI camera and integrated into a smart metering system.

Retrofitting existing meters

Since the camera only photographs the meter, no meter replacement is necessary. This method is ideal for digitizing existing meters in buildings, properties, and industrial facilities.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Sensors for Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)

Here we answer some questions about our AI cameras. If you'd like personal advice beyond this, get in touch via our contact form.

Smart metering refers to the automatic, digital capture and remote transmission of meter readings. Instead of manual readings, consumption data is transmitted wirelessly and can be evaluated centrally.

The AIS01 cameras are designed for water, gas, and electricity meters. Since they capture the meter reading optically, they also work with purely mechanical meters that have no data interface of their own.

The AIS01-LB uses LoRaWAN and is suitable for operation with your own gateway and long range. The AIS01-NB2 transmits via the NB-IoT cellular network and makes sense when no LoRaWAN network is available.

No. The camera is mounted in front of the existing meter and reads it optically, replacing the meter is not necessary.

No, the AIS01 cameras are not calibrated measuring devices (no MID conformity certification). They're suitable for consumption monitoring, load analysis, and alerts, not as a basis for billing under measurement and calibration law.
