In a single board computer (SBC), all the necessary components are combined on one board, in contrast to conventional desktop PCs or laptops. The main components of an SBC are Processor, clock generator, reset logic, a read-only memory for the programme and input and output groups. This manageable equipment already enables the realisation of simple sequence controls. Although most boards do not achieve the same performance as conventional PCs, they are small in size, have low power consumption and are comparatively inexpensive. Due to these characteristics, they are not used as all-rounders with high performance, but are generally used for specific tasks.

SBCs came onto the market at the end of the 1970s with the spread of microprocessors, initially to cover the need for low-cost development systems - but from the outset they were designed for use in production environments. Over time, they were increasingly used in industrial measurement, control and regulation technology. In the meantime, single-board computers have found their way into the DIY sector: The Raspberry Pi, for example, was developed to introduce young people to programming and hardware and is popular in the education and training sector. The Raspberry Pi can also be used as a media centre. The Arduino Uno is suitable for simple programming work, for example for recording and interacting with the environment.
