FAQ – Frequently asked questions about AVR

AVR describes the hardware architecture of the chip (the Atmel AVR). Arduino is the platform (hardware + software) that uses these chips. An AVR microcontroller is thus often the "brain" of an Arduino.

Many of our Pololu A-Star boards feature a USB connection and a pre-installed bootloader. An external AVR programmer is only required if you want to write to the chip without a bootloader to save memory space or to change deep system settings (fuses).

Yes, almost all boards in this category can be easily integrated into the Arduino environment. You will find the corresponding add-on files linked in the respective product descriptions.

If you are looking for a compact design with USB functionality, the ATmega32U4 (A-Star Mini/Micro) is ideal. For pure control tasks requiring many timers, the ATmega328PB is the more modern choice.
