Description
Combined with the Romi chassis, the Romi 32U4 Control Board provides a robot platform that is easy to customize and program.
The Romi 32U4 Control Board is a USB-capable Atmel ATmega32U4 AVR microcontroller with a preinstalled Arduino-compatible bootloader. The control board features two H-bridge motor drivers and is designed to connect to a Romi Encoder Pair Kit (available separately) for closed-loop motor control. It also includes a powerful 5 V step-down switching regulator, which together with a versatile power switching and distribution circuit can supply up to 2 A continuously.
A 3-axis accelerometer and a gyroscope also allow inertial measurements. Three onboard pushbuttons provide a convenient interface for user input. Feedback can be given via the LEDs, the buzzer and the connector (for an optional LCD).
The Romi 32U4 Control Board can be used either as a standalone control solution or as the basis for a more powerful Raspberry Pi. The onboard connector and mounting holes enable Raspberry Pi compatibility (Model B+ or newer, including Pi 3 Model B and Model A+), so that the Pi can be plugged directly onto the control board.
Integrated level shifters make it easy to set up I²C communication and send other signals between the two controllers. The board automatically supplies a mounted Raspberry Pi with 5 V. In this setup, the Raspberry Pi can handle high-level robot control, while the Romi 32U4 Control Board is responsible for low-level tasks such as running motors, reading encoders and interfacing with other analog or time-sensitive devices.
With a software add-on, it is possible to program the Romi 32U4 robot in the Arduino environment. Arduino libraries and example sketches are available to make getting started easier. A USB-A to Micro-B cable (not included) is required for programming.
To build a robot with the Romi 32U4 Control Board, you will need a few additional parts:
- A Romi Chassis Kit (this includes motors, wheels, a ball caster and battery contacts)
- A Romi Encoder Pair Kit
- Six AA batteries; the Romi chassis and control board work with both alkaline and NiMH batteries, although we recommend rechargeable NiMH cells
- A USB A to Micro-B cable to connect the robot to your computer for programming and debugging
- Tools to help with kit assembly; see the user's guide for a list of specific tools
