Description

This discrete MOSFET stepper motor driver allows for control of a bipolar stepper motor.

It supports a wide operating voltage range of 8 V to 50 V and can deliver up to 4 A continuous current per phase without a heat sink or forced air cooling (max. 6 A with sufficient additional cooling).

Via the SPI interface, the current limit, step mode (9 step modes from full-step to 1/256-step), decay mode, and stall detection can be configured.

The driver also offers back-EMF feedback, which can be used for more advanced control and stall detection algorithms.

Other features include reverse voltage protection, undervoltage lockout, and overcurrent protection.

Features:

  • Wide operating voltage range of 8 V to 50 V
  • High power: delivers up to 4 A continuous current per phase without additional cooling (max. 6 A with sufficient additional cooling)
  • Extensively configurable via the SPI interface
  • Optional STEP/DIR control pins (stepping can also be controlled exclusively via the SPI interface)
  • Nine different step resolutions down to 256 microsteps: full-step, half-step, 1/4-step, 1/8-step, 1/16-step, 1/32-step, 1/64-step, 1/128-step, and 1/256-step
  • Adjustable current control allows you to set the maximum output current, enabling voltages above your stepper motor's rated voltage to achieve higher step rates
  • Adaptive blanking time, adjustable decay times, and various current decay modes allow for the creation of extremely smooth motion profiles via the SPI interface
  • Optional STALL output enables stall detection during microstepping
  • Optional BEMF output allows for advanced control and stall detection algorithms based on the stepper motor's back-EMF
  • The driver supports an alternative operating mode for controlling two brushed DC motors with PWM inputs instead of a bipolar stepper motor with STEP/DIR inputs
  • Inputs compatible with 1.8 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V logic
  • All digital outputs are open-drain with pull-up resistors to the externally supplied IOREF voltage to enable use in non-5V systems (IOREF can be connected to the adjacent 5V-OUT pin in 5V systems)
  • Undervoltage lockout, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, and reverse voltage protection (up to 40 V)
  • An Arduino library and example sketches are available, providing basic functions for configuring and operating the driver

Specifications:

  • Minimum operating voltage: 8 V
  • Maximum operating voltage: 50 V
  • Continuous current per phase: 4 A
  • Maximum current per phase: 6 A
