Description
The FNIRS (Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) sensor is a user-friendly sensor that uses two emitting LEDs—one in the red and one in the infrared spectral range—to measure the reflection of red and infrared light in cortical tissue.
It provides a non-invasive method for estimating local blood oxygen saturation to obtain information about the activity of perfused tissue, for example, to measure and track the activity of a specific brain region by detecting fluctuations in oxygen saturation. The sensor is primarily designed for measurements on the forehead.
The light reflected from each of these LEDs is detected by a photodiode, and this current is then converted into a digital value that is transmitted via SPI. In addition, the collected sensor data can be used to determine heart rate.
This sensor was developed in collaboration with the research and development company Charles River Analytics to offer a new, miniaturized FNIRS sensor that enables the acquisition of high-quality data in brain activity tracking applications while limiting costs to a fraction of the cost of current systems.
