JST connectors are electrical connectors manufactured according to the design of J.S.T. Mfg. Co. (Japan Solderless Terminal). Mistakenly, JST is often used in the maker scene and DIY electronics as a term for ONE small white electrical connector mounted on PCBs.
However, JST connectors are available in numerous series with different pin-to-pin distances. This means that JST is not a specification for a connector, but merely the name of a company that produces a wide variety of connectors. JST connectors are used in many types of products.
JST connector series
The names for JST connectors are sometimes confusing, as each of the ten families also has a dozen subcategories. The JST part refers only to the solderless connection type, all connectors share this connection type. The following suffix (-PH, -XH, etc.) refers to the shape and style of the connector.
These families/series share the pin-to-pin spacing, but not the shape and size of the housing. To define this size, the combination of numbers and letters after the family designation refers to the size of the unit.
If you are looking for a specific replacement part for your project, it is important for you to know the full specification you need. It's worth noting that each family of connectors has its own current / voltage / wire size values.
Also be aware of the imperial / metric conversions. A common problem is that 2.5mm connectors are not the same as 2.54mm connectors, despite their often misleading titles.
To avoid confusion, it is advisable to describe a connector by using the following: the name of the manufacturer, the exact connector series and optionally the pin spacing (pitch), e.g. JST-XH-2.50mm or similar variations.
